DigiD is your digital identity for Dutch government services. You need it for your tax return, benefits, requesting official documents, and more and more healthcare services. But DigiD is also known for its frustrations: the app not working, an activation code that doesn't arrive, or a password you've lost. Here you'll find the solution for the most common problems.
DigiD application or activation fails

When you first apply for a DigiD, you receive an activation code by mail. The letter is sent to the address where you are registered with the municipality. The letter can take up to five business days. Haven't received anything after five business days? Check if your address is correct with the municipality and request a new code at digid.nl.
Please note: the activation code is only valid for a limited time (usually twenty days). If you wait too long to activate, you'll need to request a new code.
Forgotten DigiD password or username

Go to digid.nl and click Login, then Forgotten password or Forgotten username. You'll receive a recovery email at the email address linked to your DigiD. No longer have access to that email address? Then you can apply for a new DigiD. Your old DigiD will be automatically cancelled.
The DigiD app isn't working
The DigiD app can have issues after a phone update, with insufficient storage space, or if your phone doesn't support NFC (needed for the ID check). Try deleting the app and reinstalling it. Make sure your phone software is up to date. Still not working? You can log in using DigiD with SMS verification instead of the app for now.
Can't log in to MijnOverheid or the Tax Authority
Sometimes the problem isn't with DigiD itself but with the website you're trying to log in to. Try a different browser (Chrome if you're using Firefox, or vice versa). Clear your browser cache and cookies. Doesn't work on your computer? Try it on your phone or tablet. If none of these steps help, there may be an outage at the government agency in question. Check their website for notifications.
DigiD and the tax return
Every year between March 1 and May 1, you can file your tax return via the Dutch Tax Authority website. You log in with DigiD. During this period, the system is under heavy load and delays can occur. Tip: don't file on the first or last day. Can't file the return yourself? You can authorize someone else via the Tax Authority's authorization page.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to receive my DigiD activation code?
The activation code is sent by mail and usually arrives within three to five business days. During busy periods (around tax season) it may take a bit longer. The code is valid for twenty days.
Can someone else do my tax return with an authorization?
Yes. You can authorize a family member, friend, or tax advisor through the Tax Authority website. The authorized person then logs in with their own DigiD and can file the return on your behalf.
Is the DigiD app mandatory?
No. You can also log in with your username, password, and an SMS code. The app is a convenient option but not a requirement. Some services require a higher security level for which the app is needed, but for most purposes, SMS verification is sufficient.
What should I do if my DigiD is blocked?
After too many failed login attempts, your DigiD is temporarily blocked. Wait one hour and try again. Still can't get in? Request a new password at digid.nl. Your account remains intact; only the password is reset.
Can I use DigiD on my tablet?
Yes. The DigiD app is available for both smartphones and tablets (iOS and Android). You can also log in via the browser on your tablet to access government services with DigiD.
